Considering its position on the boundary of three different land units of the Bohemian Switzerland or also in the broader area of the Labské pískovce (Elbe Sandstones), the Lužické hory (Luž Mountains) and the Šluknovská pahorkatina (Šluknov Hilly Land) Brtníky offers a great variety of opportunities to hike, ride a bike and do many other holiday activities. There are also some frontiers crossings to Germany for cars as well as for pedestrians and bikers near Brtníky.
The village of Brtníky is the starting point of marked paths and routes for tourists and bikers leading to the Národní park České Švýcarsko (Bohemian Switzerland National Park) and the Národní park Saské Švýcarsko (Saxon Switzerland National Park) as well as to the area of Šluknovský výběžek (Šluknov Hook) and the Lužické hory (Luž Mountains).
The area of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park offers a variety of opportunities for trips in woodland striated with a lot of ravines and canyons with sand rocks. Bikers can ride only the marked cycling routes. Near Brtníky, there are several frontiers crossings for pedestrians and bikers to the German part of the area of sand-stones called the Saxon Switzerland National Park. In winter visitors can admire the nearby icefalls (Opona by Šternberk, Velký sloup in the Vlčí potok (Wolf Brook) valley and the ice decoration in the Jeskyně víl (Cave of Fairies) in the Kyjov valley on their hikes or cross-country skiing trips).
The area of the Šluknovská pahorkatina (Šluknov Hilly Land) around Brtníky is characterized by a rough terrain with distinct wooded hills (Tanečnice, Hrazený, Vlčí hora, Dymník). In the vicinity of Brtníky it is possible to climb up several watchtowers (Vlčí hora, Dymník, Tanečnice and Weifberg in Germany) which afford stunning panoramic views. Thanks to close proximity to the frontier with Germany it is possible to take trips also to that foreign area both by car (the nearest frontier crossings are in Dolní Poustevna - Sebnitz, Rožany - Sohland and Rumburk - Seifhennersdorf) and on foot or bikes using the frontier crossings for pedestrians and bikes. In the area of Šluknovský výběžek (Šluknov Hook) visitors can also ride some marked cycling routes of different levels of difficulty.
The area of the Lužické hory (Luž Mountains) is a hilly land with possibilities of panoramic views from hills and mountains (Jedlová, Luž, and Klíč).
In Brtníky it is possible to have a swim in the local open-air swimming pool (for free without the franchisee). In the immediate surroundings, there are a very nice dam near the wood in Kyjov (7 km far) and a well-kept-up open-air swimming pool in Mikulášovice (5km far). Other opportunities to have a swim in the surroundings are in Rumburk and Velký Šenov (10km). There is also a summer campus with a lot of water attractions in Taubenheim (Germany, 15 km). The indoor swimming pool in Rumburk (10 km) and the aqua parks in Neustadt (Germany, 26 km) and Liberec (Babylon Aqua park, 60 km) can be enjoyed a year round.
Favourers of downhill skiing and snowboarding can visit the downhill ski campus in Horní Podluží (12 km). The artificial snow making is used here and evening skiing can be enjoyed here for the whole season. In the campus, there are two ski tows and two ski runs. Another winter campus is in Jedlová (15 km). Here are two ski tows (one of them leads up to the top of Jedlová Mountain - 780 m above sea level) and four ski runs. A bit further away, there is a ski campus in Horní Světlá pod Luží (25 km) with several ski tows and runs.
It is possible to set off for cross country skiing trips straight from Brtníky. In the Jedlová campus and around Luž Mountain, there are quite well-kept-up cross country skiing tracks.
In the immediate surroundings of Brtníky visitors can take a horse-drawn carriage trip from a farm in Staré Křečany (5 km).
In Brtníky, there is a nice grass football pitch which can be used for free. In nearby Zahrady (4 km) people can play tennis in the tennis courts for some fee. In Krásná Lípa (8 km) people can play sports (tennis, mini golf, volleyball) in the new sports campus.
